Dogs are often my heroes

I walk groups of dogs everyday off leash in a beautiful, 20 acre dog park near my home here in East Hampton.  I know most of the dogs that I encounter, there as most of the people who walk their dogs there are local.  Occasionally we will meet a dog that we are unfamiliar with.  One of my dogs is an extremely friendly ( but rowdy Frenchie)  she has never met a dog or human that does she doesn't like in her relatively short life.  However , sometimes she meets a dog that does not like her?

Spring is finally here!

It has been a long, brutal winter here on Long Island.  The only good thing about that is there are no ticks and fleas yet.....  In celebration of that and the warmer weather this is the perfect time of year to get your dog out into the wild places that you do not want to go when the ticks arrive.  So get out to that woodland trail and enjoy no, before the bugs arrive!  Your dog will love exploring some new territory and you can use the the adventure to practice you re-call skills with your dog.

Fall is Flea Season

Fall is flea season,  even though you may notice that ticks seem to be less of a problem warm fall weather is great for fleas.  It is particularly bad if you go into the cooler months with fleas already in your house, the fleas multiply in the warm areas of your house.  The bottom line is to keep putting flea and tick protection on your dogs and cats through out the fall until it gets really cold for a few weeks. Here in Long Island that is usually not until December.

Dealing with the heat

.In really hot weather be sure to take it slow with your dogs on walks, forget about completing your usual distance , just take a short walk and find someplace in the shade to hang with your dog outside for a while and bring some water and a bowl along for drinking.  Keep cool out there!
